Humanimals – When Good Furries Go Bad

Hat tip to Shock Till You Drop for pointing me in the direction of Humanimals.

This bizarre movie from Chilean filmmaker Francesc Morales looks like being just up my street. According to the official synopsis:

“The clumsy Turtle is a victim of the smart Fox. When Cat appears, they compete to seduce her. Cat is only interested in the one that incorporates human habits. Turtle realizes he can gain some advantage by feeding a strange creature with animal meat.”

To make things even more surreal, the characters are played by people dressed up as animals and there’s no dialogue.

Obviously this won’t be to everyone’s taste but personally I’m really looking forward to it.

Spielberg NOT Remaking Oldboy

Old Boy - Manga

Many fear fans were less than thrilled to hear that Steven Spielberg was to remake Chan-wook Park’s classic Oldboy. The presence of Will Smith in the lead role was hardly reassuring.

Now it’s being reported that Spielberg will not be remaking Oldboy. He’ll still be makingOldboy, just not remaking it.

Confused? I’m not surprised!

It appears that rather than base his movie on the Korean classic, Spielberg intends to go further back and work from the original manga comic books by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya. So it won’t be a remake of the first film, rather an alternative take on the original source material.

I’m still not convinced.

Romero Hits Up Olyphant For Crazies Lead

Agent 47

It’s been announced the the actor Timothy Olyphant (“Ol-uh-fint”) is to star in the remake of George A. Romero’s classic 1970s movie The Crazies.

Olyphant, who will play the town sheriff, is probably most famous for his role as Agent 47 in the game inspired movie Hitman. He also stars in A Perfect Getaway which will be released next year.

The remake of The Crazies has Romero as “Executive Producer” however his involvement is likely to be minimal beyond the use of his name. The initial script was written by Scott Kosar then handed over to Ray Wright. Direction will be by Will Eisner. The movie is due to open in the US in Sptember 2009.

I can’t claim to be overly excited.

Tremors 5: Thunder From Down Under

Tremors Attack Pack

Rumours are circulating that there is to be a new Tremors Movie. According to reports the new film is to be set in Australia and subtitled The Thunder From Down Under. It’s likely to be a DVD only release.

I’ve got mixed feelings about this. I loved the original Tremors movie, but by the time of Tremors 3: Back to Perfection it had got so silly that I didn’t bother with The Legend Begins.

As usual, it all depends on the script.

The Name’s Z, World War Z

The acclaimed zombie novel World War Z (WWZ) by Max Brooks has been on my “must read” list for a while now. It looks like the forthcoming film will also go onto my “must see” list.
World War Z by Max Brooks
Movie rights for the novel were bought by Paramount in 2006 and the project is set to be handled by Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B. The great J. Michael Straczynski is already on board for the script and now Variety reports that the World War Z will be directed by Marc Forster. Forster is currently enjoying success as director of hit James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

WWZ might turn out to be a very diferent zombie movie to the sort we’re used to seeing. The novel itself is set ten years after the actual outbreak and involves interviews for a UN Postwar Commission trying to investigate the disaster. According to Forster:

The genre always fascinated me, and when they pitched it to me, it reminded me of the paranoid conspiracy films of the ’70s like ‘All the President’s Men’
