Shooting has started on a new vampire musical comedy Suck. The film, written directed by and starring Rob Stefaniuk, concerns a wannabe rock group ironically called “The Winners”. The band will do “anything” to become famous – cue the vampires!
Alice Cooper plays a bartender and Iggy Pop a music producer. Moby also appears as the lead singer of another band.
The film stars Malcolm McDowell as a vampire hunter – who’s afraid of the dark.
It could be fun, but any time I see a movie written, directed by and starring the same person it rings alarm bells.

Hat tip to Shock Till You Drop for pointing me in the direction of Humanimals.
This bizarre movie from Chilean filmmaker Francesc Morales looks like being just up my street. According to the official synopsis:
“The clumsy Turtle is a victim of the smart Fox. When Cat appears, they compete to seduce her. Cat is only interested in the one that incorporates human habits. Turtle realizes he can gain some advantage by feeding a strange creature with animal meat.”
To make things even more surreal, the characters are played by people dressed up as animals and there’s no dialogue.
Obviously this won’t be to everyone’s taste but personally I’m really looking forward to it.

Should Survivors be classed as science fiction or horror? I wasn’t sure but in the end decided on SF, so you can read my review here: BBC Survivors Review.

Many fear fans were less than thrilled to hear that Steven Spielberg was to remake Chan-wook Park’s classic Oldboy. The presence of Will Smith in the lead role was hardly reassuring.
Now it’s being reported that Spielberg will not be remaking Oldboy. He’ll still be makingOldboy, just not remaking it.
Confused? I’m not surprised!
It appears that rather than base his movie on the Korean classic, Spielberg intends to go further back and work from the original manga comic books by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya. So it won’t be a remake of the first film, rather an alternative take on the original source material.
I’m still not convinced.

It’s been announced the the actor Timothy Olyphant (”Ol-uh-fint”) is to star in the remake of George A. Romero’s classic 1970s movie The Crazies.
Olyphant, who will play the town sheriff, is probably most famous for his role as Agent 47 in the game inspired movie Hitman. He also stars in A Perfect Getaway which will be released next year.
The remake of The Crazies has Romero as “Executive Producer” however his involvement is likely to be minimal beyond the use of his name. The initial script was written by Scott Kosar then handed over to Ray Wright. Direction will be by Will Eisner. The movie is due to open in the US in Sptember 2009.
I can’t claim to be overly excited.
