Mini Horror Reviews

Movie Titles M-R

Mulberry Street (2006) ***
Mulberry Street is a potentially great little film ruined by the decision to shoot the whole thing on shaky handheld camera. One of my pet peeves unless there's a good reason such as a single viewpoint character.

Night Junkies (2007) ****
I really enjoyed Night Junkies. It has a great twisted urban atmoshpere and is definitely an antidote to sparkly, celibate vamps!

Night of the Demons (2009) *
<plot>Haunted House + Halloween Party = Demonic Possession</plot>
Night of the Demons has lots of music, blood and sexy women. Unfortunately it has no atmosphere and the feeble backstory is ladled out in big infodumps. An unimaginative, humourless remake with some style but little else.

Orphan (2009) ****
Orphan begins as a fairly standard "evil child" cuckoo-in-the-nest movie. Most of the events are telegraphed way in advance, however there's an interesting little twist that drives the final act. It's a classy piece of horror with a great deal of atmosphere and building menace.

Population 436 (2006) **
Population 436 has an interesting premise: an idyllic small town has had exactly the same population for a century. Unfortunately the idea isn't developed enough to support a whole movie whilst both the script and the directing are heavy handed. The result ends up being almost a parody of itself.

Prom Night (2008) ***
Despite the name Prom Night (2008) isn't really a remake. It's a by-the-numbers teen slasher with an ideal script for cliche bingo. But it's competent enough with classy direction which more than compensates for the lack of gore. Better than expected.

The Quick and the Undead (2006) ****
The Quick and the Undead Is a cowboys vs zombie movie with the main character doing an OTT Clint Eastwood impression. Not exactly a classic but good low budget fun.
